Camera Mounts > Types> Body Mount

If I seem anti-handholding, it's because I am. Handholding is a crutch for lazy people. Having said that, I know professionals who do handhold from time to time. But it's always the second choice--the tripod is the first choice.

BODY MOUNT:
"Body mount" is a fancy way of saying "on your shoulder."

Sometimes it's necessary to shoot this way: running after the President; chasing down spot news, etc. If you must handhold, set your camera for the shortest focal length possible (wide angle). This will minimize shakiness.

Also, this seems like the logical place to talk about using whatever is at hand to create a steady shot. Try putting your camera on the sidewalk as people walk by. It's a cool shot. A park bench, car hood, or kitchen table can also serve in a pinch. A wallet is a handy helper in these situations because it gives you the option of raising or lowering the camera a smidge to get just the right angle.
