Camera Mounts > Introduction

What's this crazy contraption? It's called a jib arm--you'll learn more in future pages.

A "camera mount " is anything that holds a camera. Your shoulder is, in fact, a camera mount. In this chapter we will consider a wide variety of mounting equipment—ranging from tripods to "steadicams."

TRIPOD:
The tripod is the most common from of mounting equipment. You have probably seen tripods for sale at your local discount store for $40 bucks, but those cheapo tripods don't work well for video—for reasons we will explain.

Amazingly professional tripods can cost thousands. A camera operator I know spent $8,000 for his sticks ("Sticks" is another term for tripod). No, it wasn't gold plated!
