Editing > Marriage of Picture and Sound

(This clip HAS sound) This 30 second clip illustrates the "marriage" of picture and sound.

"Marrying" picture and sound means linking the video to the narration. Importantly however, the narration should NOT describe the pictures.

In the top example at the right (The open of my film "The Gold Rush") the narration and pictures are linked. For example, the narrator says "In this sleepy valley..." referencing the valley we see on screen. Later he mentions an "obscure river" and we see several shots of the river.

However, the narrator (John Lithgow) does not describe the scene. That is, he doesn't tell us there is fog, because anyone can see that. So there should be a linkage of picture and sound--but don't tell viewers what they can clearly see.

Marrying picture and sound takes a bit of practice, but an understanding that you should link the two together is a good start!
