Composition > Get Close

A lot of camcorders have powerful lenses that let you shoot from very far away. This is a mistake. Sure it is polite--and intuitive--to stay a safe distance from your subject, but politeness does not good video photography make.

Professional camera operators make a point of getting close to their subjects. Why? The video looks better. Getting close to your subject means shots that are more dynamic, more three-dimensional, more involving. This is tough for most beginning camcorder users to do--it is just so much easier to stand far back and zoom in. But it's worth noting that while amateurs look for super-zoom lenses, professionals crave wide-angle lenses--which allow them to get even closer to their subjects.

Of course there are times that a super-zoom lens is great: shooting your daughter's recital from the back of the room, for instance. But even in that example, you'd get better shots by sneaking to the front of the room.


Three good examples of getting close. All these images were shot from within a foot or two of the subject. The resulting shots are dynamic and visually engaging. Don't be afraid to get close.
