Composition > Space > Headroom

"Headroom" is the name for the space above a person's head in a close-up.

There are a number of terms professionals use to describe the space around their subjects. It is important to understand and use these concepts, since the proper use of space is a key to good composition.

Headroom:
"Headroom" is the term given to the space above the subject's head. If you watch any TV, you will see a consistent sliver of space in close-ups of people. Too much headroom makes your shot look off balance--and too little cuts of the subject's head.
