MATCHED ACTION
Watch this old movie scene at the right. How many edits did you see? You might not have noticed any, because the edits are perfectly matched. For example, when she falls off the ladder in the close-up, her position and direction are identical in the next shot. It is perfectly matched. In fact, you may have to watch this more than once to even notice the edits. That's because matched cutting is nearly invisible. This illustrates why the general public does not understand editing... when it is done right, nobody notices.
MATCHED ACTION
Here is another type of match. Watch the cowboy enter the room from the hallway—then notice where he is when the film cuts to the interior of the room. He is in the same position in each shot. It's a perfect match. The second shot was filmed on a different day, but through skillful editing, it all seems seamless.
