A "character generator" (generally abbreviated CG) is a standalone device (or a piece of software) that types words and letters on screen.

It's not all that different from a word processor in that you can change the size of text, change the font, align left or right, etc.

Because of television's limited resolution, big, bold text works better on a CG.
