Sound > Mikes > Types > Parabolic

Parabolic mikes are used to pick up weak sounds.

You've probably seen these on the sidelines at football games. "Parabolic" mikes look like those little satellite dishes--and they work under the same basic principle. That is, the parabola works to concentrate a weak signal. So anytime you want to hear something that's very far away, a parabolic mike might be in order. Examples include the quarterback barking plays or the chirping of the rare yellowbelly sapsucker.

Good parabolic mikes are a lot of fun--for example, you could hear a private conversation from across the park. This is why spies use parabolic mikes all the time. Gosh, with a parabolic mike and night-vision goggles, you could set up your own counterintelligence agency (Just kidding. While the gear is legal, poking into people's private affairs could land you in jail!)
