Video Recording > Formats > 3/4 inch

3/4 inch:

Image quality: good

Generation loss: Yes. But you can go 3 generations before it looks too bad.

Recording method: Composite

Digital or Analog: Analog

Other incarnations: 3/4 SP

Uses: Three-quarter (by the way, it is always pronounced "three-quarter" NEVER "three-fourths") was the first truly portable video format. It was a godsend in the 1970s, when the only real alternative was to shoot movie film. Since then, lots of smaller, better formats have come on the market. But 3/4-inch is still widely used at many stations because it is the one of the few formats that nearly every station has (Interestingly, many TV stations and production companies don’t have even one VHS machine!). And many stations have their tape library on 3/4-inch. Make no mistake, 3/4 IS dying. It’s just that it’s dying slowly because it has been around for so long.

Thye're big and clunky--but every station and production company has a 3/4-inch deck. And that's an asset in itself.
