Graphics > Character Generator

A "character generator" (generally abbreviated CG) is a standalone device (or a piece of software) that types words and letters on screen.

It's not all that different from a word processor in that you can change the size of text, change the font, align left or right, etc. CGs are a mainstay at every television station and production company.

Each CG works a little differently, but there is some basic concepts you should understand. First, because of TV's limited resolution, you must be sure you use fairly big, bold text on a CG.

Yes, these are the same Lincoln images you saw a few pages back, but the point is worth repeating: Thick fonts (at left) work better than skinny fonts (at right).
