Graphics > Technical Limitations > Aspect Ratio

3 high by 4 wide—that's the aspect ratio of nearly all televisions. No matter how big, they are still 3 high by 4 wide (3x4 aspect ratio). You may have noticed that movies in a theater have a wider aspect ratio.

Television graphics have three major technical limitations. Understanding these technical limitations is a prerequisite to creating successful graphics.

Limitation 1) ASPECT RATIO
Unlike the printed page (which can be almost any shape) television graphics must fit in the 3 by 4 "aspect ratio" of television. (Someday, we will all have 16 x 9 widescreen TVs, but the issue will really be the same.)

All graphics must fit gracefully in that rectangular frame.
