MATCHED ACTION

This sequence is especially interesting. By cutting on the action of the fall, the edits are all but invisible. Watch it. Notice that in the fourth shot she falls face-first, but in the other shots, she falls back first. Is that an error? Not really. Because the editing—on the action—hides it.

That’s a really important point: no two shots will ever match perfectly. The goal isn’t perfection; rather, the goal is to create a flow to the story. Some sticklers will always find tiny flaws (like in this clip); but don’t get too hung up on the minutia. The story is the thing.

Cutting on the Action

In the second-to-last shot she falls forward, but in all the other shots, she is falling backward. If I had not pointed that out, you would not have noticed.
