Not to be confused with "steady" circuitry in many cameras, a true Steadicam is a body harness that miraculously smooths out handheld shots. An operator can run up and down stairs or over rocks and the result is a super-smooth shot.

There are many iterations of Steadicam technology. All these devices have their place. But they don't replace the basic tripod, which still works best for most situations.
