CARDIOID

"Cardioid" (pronounced "car-DEE-oid") microphones pick up sound in one direction only. They are called cardioid, because the pickup pattern is sort of heart-shaped.

Cardioid mikes are very useful in video production because they allow you to point the mike at the sound you want—thus minimizing the sounds you don't.
