Wide Angle
At the other end of the scale from telephoto is Wide Angle.
Wide angle (also called "zoomed out" or "short focal length") lens settings have the opposite characteristics of telephoto settings. With a wide angle setting, you CAN handhold the camera sometimes, because camera movement is dampened.
Also, wide angle lenses exaggerate distance. That is, they make things seem further apart.
To the right is an example of how this works.
Both these shots were taken from the same place. And both are "full shot a person."
The difference is that one is shot with a wide angle lens, and the other with a telephoto lens. The difference is amazing. Notice how far away the McDonalds seems in the wide angle shot (actually, you can't even see it), but it seems close in telephoto.
