Framing

One specialized use of foreground elements is called framing. Skilled shooters look for foreground objects in a scene that can draw the viewer’s eye to a key object. The “frame” can be an overhanging tree, a doorway, or, in the example below, a fence. Not every shot has a frame, but good shooters look for these opportunities.
