Reflector/Bounce Card
Shooting outdoors on a bright day often means the sun will create ugly hard shadows on your subject. The easiest way to solve this problem is with a "bounce card" or "reflector" which bounces sunlight into the shadow areas.
(Generally "bounce cards" are hand held, whereas "reflectors" are bigger and on stands.)
To see the effect of a reflector, move it back and forth--to get precisely the effect you want. It's useless unless you are angling it into the sun just right. This may take some practice. But it's worth the effort. A bounce card or reflector can improve the quality of your image immensely.
In this famous scene from the beginning of "The Andy Griffith Show," the hard sunlight is coming from the right. The reflectors are positioned to bounce that light into the faces of Andy Griffith and Ron Howard, to fill in the shadows caused by the harsh sun.
