At left, a "half screen" which covers half of the instrument. A full screen would, of course, cover the full circle.

Scrim/Screen

A "scrim" is a piece of special heat-resistant fabric than hangs in front of a lighting instrument to soften the light .

A "screen" is a metal grid much like a window screen. It also softens a harsh light source.

In addition to softening the light, scrims and screens also cut down on the light intensity.

In the scene above, a hard spotlight is illuminating the scene. Adding a screen or scrim will soften the light. To see the effect of a scrim or screen, click on the button. Note how the harsh shadows are eliminated.
