Focal length
Each level of magnification is assigned a number, referred to as the "focal length."
Lots of magnification (telephoto) means a large focal length number (like 100) while less magnification (wide angle) means a smaller number (like 10).
Many lower-end cameras don't display the focal length number on their lenses.
Two shots from exactly the same spot--the only difference is the focal length of the lens. With a 6 millimeter (mm) setting on the left, the result is a wide angle shot. With a 60 millimeter setting on the right, the result is a telephoto shot. A zoom lens makes it easy to glide between these settings.
