Gradually, filmmakers began to learn the powerful techniques of editing. The basics were worked out a century ago, but they are as effective today as they ever were.
Even the simplest assembly of shots—done skillfully—can create can create an amazing effect in the mind of the viewer.
To the right is an example of what I mean. It's a re-creation of a famous editing experiment from the early 1900s. Watch the clip. Then, decide what you believe the man is thinking at the end of the clip.
