Light > Characteristics > Hard vs Soft

Look at your shadow right now. Are you lit with soft light or hard light? Generally, humans look better when lit with soft light. Your high school yearbook picture was shot using soft light, for example.

But soft light has a disadvantage. It's harder to control. That is, soft light is spread out--it doesn't travel in a narrow beam. As a result, soft light often spills into places where you may not want it. So we use both hard and soft light in television and film production: hard because it is easier to control and direct; and soft light because is often produces a more appealing image.
