You saw this image earlier. It is a good illustration of how telephoto lens settings minimize depth of field.

Now that we have established that the ability to manipulate depth of field is important, here's the nuts and bolts of how to do it.

There are three ways to alter depth of field.

1) Focal length:
As we discussed, telephoto lens settings limit the number of things in focus. That is, they decrease depth of field. Wide angle lenses increase depth of field.

The illustration at the right, shot with a telephoto lens, has a very narrow depth of field. The kid is in focus--the close sand and far water are not.
