Lens > Wide Angle

OK, so far we have covered the three characteristics of telephoto lens settings (compress distance, movement noticeable, and focus critical). Now lets talk about the characteristics of wide angle lenses.

Wide Angle
Wide angle (also called "zoomed out" or "short focal length") lens settings have the opposite characteristics of telephoto settings. With a wide angle setting, you CAN handhold the camera sometimes, because camera movement is dampened.

You already know telephoto lenses compress distance, so it should be no surprise that wide angle lenses exaggerate distance. That is, they make things seem further apart.

Below is a really cool example. These two shots both show a full shot of me. Importantly, I'm in exactly the same location in both shots. The ONLY difference is that one is shot with a wide angle lens, and the other with a telephoto lens. It's kind of amazing really. Notice how far away the McDonalds seems in the wide angle shot (actually, you can't even see it), but it seems close in telephoto.

BOTH of these shots are "full shot of a funny-looking guy." I am standing in the same place in both shots (did I say that already?) The dramatically different backgrounds are due to the fact that one shot is wide angle and one is telephoto. (Don't blow this off--look at the backgrounds closely. See the differences!)
