Lens > Focal Length

Each level of magnification is assigned a number, referred to as the "focal length."

Lots of magnification (telephoto) means a large focal length number (like 100) while less magnification (wide angle) means a smaller number (like 10).

Most consumer camcorders don't even bother to list the focal length number, but you should have a basic understanding of the term, because professional camera operators will often refer to the focal length number when describing a zoom setting.

Two shots from exactly the same spot--the only difference is the focal length of the lens. With a 6 millimeter (mm) setting on the left, you get a wide angle shot. With a 60 millimeter setting on the right, you get a telephoto shot. And there is nothing magic about these numbers, you could shoot at 50mm or 20mm or anything in between. In fact, by definition, a zoom lens lets you glide between a wide range of focal length settings.
